    Dear all,
Good day.i am a newbie here and not sure this is the correct place for me to ask some advise from all to improve

    1) what does a basic skill or technic? A list will be very helpful.
    2) how can i improve my wrist work at home. i mean when is free at home or watching tv.
    3) which is easier to master for smash?? Accuracy or power?
    4) how to train to increase power?

    Thanks in advance.

    chee how.

    Hi chee how,

and welcome to the forums :)

A good question you have, a bit broad though. Surely others will extend/correct my answer.

    1) I see the basic skills like this
    (i) racket skill (grips, various strokes)
(ii) footwork (posture, footwork patterns, rythm)
(iii) tactics (how to build up a winning situation)

    2) Use a heavy racket, a squash racket say, or a badminton racket with the cover on while making badminton-like stroke moves when watching your favourite TV series ;)

    3) This one I really do not know, I believe it is difficult to be accurate, difficult to have maximum power and extremely difficult to have accuracy and maximum power simultaneously

    4) What I interprete as power on badminton court derives from the following (among other things…)
    (i) correct technique
(ii) muscle power, mainly legs, abs, wrist and fingers
(iii) flexibility (allows explosiveness of movement)

So to train power, one should try to improve (i)-(iii) somehow.

This is just my two pennies’ worth.

    Hi chee how,
As Sulismies said, it is a difficult question as a lot of it depends on your own strengths and weaknesses as to what you need to improve. But I will add my two pennies to Sulismies’!
    1) Basic skills:
    i) Good technique (all shots need to be groomed so that the preparation is the same so that you can build in deception later)
ii) Footwork – REALLY important, and often overlooked. If you have good footwork you get to the shot earlier and don’t expend as much energy
iii) Tactics – remember singles, level and mixed doubles are different. You have to work on the tactics for each branch you want to play
iv) Self-belief – this can be improved by working hard on your game and BELIEVING that you deserve good results because you have put the time and effort in.
    2) Agree with what Sulismies said, but would add doing figure of eights to that. You can also try it with a bottle of water – add more water as your wrist gets stronger
    3) It varies from person to person, but I believe accuracy is more important than power. If you are going to work on one thing, accuracy is the most important
    4) Training for power
    i) Correct technique is the most important
ii) Conditioning – mixture of strength training, plyometrics, resistance training, flexibility etc. The aim is not to be ‘BIG’ but ‘balanced’. Training rackets are really good to develop specific wrist strength/finger power for badminton
iii) Practice, practice and more practice!
If you are a reasonably good player, you can try something like performance profiling to identify your strengths and weaknesses, and then use this information to decide the most important training you need to do for you personally. I set up an Excel spreadsheet to do this that I could email you if you like?

thanks to all of the feedback and advise. It really never come across my mind that to play a better game required that much of effort and I appreciate it a lot.

mei wyatt – i will be very happy if can email it to me at yiauch@gmail.com.

    Thanks and regards,
    Chee how

Definately, doing figure of eights is a good idea.

    Mel,
that performance profiling thing sounds interesting. If you are willing to share the spreadsheet, I would be interested in it as well.

I’m a lazy guy anywayz, so it would be nice to know the most important training I should do ;)

    Hi Guys,
Happy to share – that’s what we are here for, right? That way we all get better!
The performance profiling is a way of identifying what to prioritise. If you have a weak smash, it is easy to decide that you need to work on that ;-) !
But if your game is reasonably good, it can be hard to decide what to work on to give you the best improvement. The instructions are on the spreadsheet, but basically, you pick 15-20 technical skills, physical factors and psychological skills. Rate how important you think these are to an ‘Elite’ player. You then assess how good YOU are at these skills. My spreadsheet then gives a graph to help you prioritise what to work on. While you might not want to work on more than 1 or 2 technical skills at a time, you can work on 1 or 2 of each. It is worthwhile then reassessing yourself say, every 3 months and see what you work out is most important to work on next.
