Choosing the Right Raquet (17 posts)

  • Avatar Image Mayank Jha said 1 month, 1 week ago:

    Hi,

On the videos it seems Peter is using Yonex Carbonex 21. I have been using the Oval shaped Carbonex 21 for last 6 months. Now i need to upgrade to something better but most of the higher end raquets in Yonex are Isometric. Which one is more suited for a singles play the Nanospeed, or the Arcsaber?

Nanospeed are mainly for doubles as they are head light.
Arcsaber are even with a slight of head heavy.
    Armotec are head heavy.

So you mean for Singles either i should choose from Arcsaber or Armotec?

There is a Yonex chart which might prove useful:

Head heavy generates more power, but are less manouverable.
Don't forget if you play with thick or thin grips it will change the balance point.
I don't think there is any 'one' answer: it depends on the player, and if you can try out some demos you can get a feel of what is right for you, your style of play, and your ability. I have tried rackets recommended by friends, and struggled with them. Try different shops and see if they will let you have a demo so you can get a feel for the racket before you buy.

I am confused between ArcSaber-Z-Slash and Nanospeed 9900. I hear the Z-Slash is more powerful but lacks control need to give both of them a try.

Also i am currently using Cbx 21 Special and quiet happy with it. I see that the head shape is similar to Z Slash, and i like that in comparison to perfect isometric shape.

Yonex market the Z-Slash in the UK as 'The first racket from Yonex with a compact frame'.
Haven't tried it, but have heard mixed reports; let us know how you get on with it!

I tired a Z-Slash at the Scottish Open in November, I wasn't overly impressed by it. Plenty of overhead power but lacking control at the net.

I use a 900 Technique after stints with MusclePower 88 and ArcSaber7. So I'm probably not the best person to ask about an attack-minded racket.

I had heard similar things about it being hard work: great if you hit it sweetly overhead, but in balance, not a 'nice' racket to use. Maybe someone out there has tried it and loves the racket – maybe they could post and give us the other viewpoint???

Bought the Arcsaber Z Slash and Armourtec 900 will be testing the Z Slash this weekend, will update then.

Will look forward to the review Mayank!

Played with it yesterday and will be playing with it today. I think i need to adjust my baseline gave a little as if i hit hard it feels it will cross the line, and when i hit it slow it does not hit the baseline. Otherwise the smashes are going great and net play needs a little bit effort.

Thanks Mayank – will check back tomorrow to see how you get on with it on the second day ;-)

  • Avatar Image Mayank Jha said 2 weeks, 3 days ago:

On the second day play (Saturday) i broke my Ashway strings on the Z Slash, got it restrung on BG 65Ti and now i am able to control the returns and clears much much better. Still need to work on my smashes. BTW my smashes on Z slash are no more faster then they are on my AT 900T. Hence if someone claims that the smashes will be faster just by using Z Slash is probably wrong. Nevertheless i like the raquet so far.

Hi Mayank. What strings were you using? Personally, I am not a great fan of the BG65Ti; I just do not 'feel' the shuttle on them as much as, say BG80 or Ashaway ZyMax. I think you have hit the nail on the head when you say that just by using the Z-Slash you will not get more power on your smashes – I think it is very much a personal thing; using a racket you like that suits your style, with good strings strung at the right tension for you. Thanks for letting us know how you got on with it!
