Welcome everyone to our first ever Skype video show. At this point we have no name for the show but leave a comment if you have any suggestions for a name, or if you have anything to add to our analysis.

We apologize for being a little late to do this as both these events have come and gone a while ago. In the future we plan to do this after every major event.

In this edition of the unnamed show we discuss Lee Chong Wei’s incredible performances at the first two Super Series events, Joachim Persson’s struggles to regain his form, and even a brief discussion of upcoming star Viktor Axelsen.

Chen Jin

The story of the second half of the 2009 season has been the rising star Jan O Jorgensen’s growing list of conquests.  Recently he upset Peter Gade, and now in China he has upset world number one Lee Chong Wei, Boonsak Ponsana, and today he defeated his first Chinese national team member when he won a marathon match against fourth seed Chen Jin.  Jorgensen was off to a slow start in the first game when he lost 11-21.  However, Jorgensen equalized when he won the second game 21-18 to force a third and final game.  The final game went the distance with Jorgensen winning in extra points 22-20 after an hour and seven minutes.

Tomorrow Jorgensen will have to pull off the ultimate upset against World Champion Lin Dan if he is to win his first ever Super Series title.  Lin Dan had a much smoother semi-final match against Korea’s Park Sung Hwan winning in two straight games 21-10, 21-11.  In spite of a good run here so far, the odds are certainly stacked against Jorgensen tomorrow.

Korea’s Lee Yong Dae will be a busy man tomorrow as he will be featured in both the men’s doubles and mixed doubles finals.  First he partnered with Lee Hyo Jung to defeat Thailand’s Anugritayawon and Voravichitchaikul in the mixed doubles and then with Jung Jae Sung in the men’s doubles they won an incredibly close match against Denmark’s Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen 21-16, 19-21, 23-21.  Their opponents for the finals will be Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong in the men’s doubles and Zheng Bo and Ma Jin in the mixed doubles.

The women’s events have been overwhelmingly dominated by the Chinese.  Tomorrow’s women’s singles and doubles finals will be all Chinese showdowns with Tian Qing and Zhang Yawen against their teammates Du Jing and Yu Yang in the doubles and then Jiang Yanjiao against Wang Xin in the singles.

China Super Series 2009 Draws

Jan O Jorgensen

The young Dane has yet to win a Super Series title, but he has reached his third semi-final after defeating Boonsak Ponsana today in two games. The Dane commented that he wasn’t trying to push the pace against Ponsana, instead he just followed his opponent’s pace and waited for him to make errors. The final scoreline was 21-11, 21-19. Jorgensen will now play China’s Chen Jin, and while the Dane has yet to defeat a Chinese player the last time these two faced off it was a close three game battle.

World Champion Lin Dan faced recent Denmark Open champion Simon Santoso in his quarter-final match. Lin Dan said that after seeing Simon’s recent results that he was taking this match very seriously as Simon has been playing well recently, but it wasn’t enough to truly worry Lin Dan as he sailed through to the semi-finals with a 21-12, 21-12 victory. Next up Lin Dan will be playing Korea’s Park Sung Hwan.

Wong Mew Choo failed to prevent an all China semi-finals today when she lost to Wang Shixian in two games 21-10, 24-22. The only remaining Malaysian representatives in the semi-finals stage of the tournament are women’s doubles pair Wong and Chin, and men’s doubles pair Koo and Tan. For the most part the tournament has, not surprisingly, become a somewhat national competition with more than half of the remaining players coming from China.

Wong Mew Choo

Heading into the quarter-finals the Chinese team has secured all but one of the remaining eight places, and Malaysia’s Wong Mew Choo has managed to spoil the party by defeating the top seed Wang Yihan 21-18, 21-17. Perhaps equally surprising was the defeat of Denmark’s second seeded Tine Rasmussen at the hands of China’s Wang Xin 13-21, 21-12, 21-19 on the other side of the draw.

YouTube Preview Image

The men’s singles was far less dramatic with no seeded players falling, however Carl Baxter pushed Simon Santoso to the limit but failed to win the match. Santoso won in three games 14-21, 21-12, 21-18 to set up his quarter-final against Lin Dan. Lin Dan had another relatively smooth match, defeating yet another one of his teammates Chen Long 21-12, 21-15. The quarter-finals however should prove to be very exciting as there are a number of tough match ups. Of particular interest will be to see whether or not Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen is capable of going the distance, or if perhaps his big wins are restricted to the earlier rounds.

Chinese Taipei has reason to be happy with two pairings in the quarter-finals after Fang Chieh Min and Lee Sheng Mu upset third seeds Hendra Setiawan and Markis Kido in the second round. The match went the full distance with the Chinese Taipei pair winning 21-19, 11-21, 21-15. Unfortunately the two Chinese Taipei pairs must now face each other in the quarter-finals.

Jan O Jorgensen

Since his superb performance last month in Denmark where the young Dane defeated his veteran counterpart Peter Gade, all eyes have been fixed on Jan O Jorgensen. Today he improved upon his performance by defeating world number one Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia. Jorgensen came out with guns blazing, winning the first game 21-6. Things looked bad though when Lee came back in the second game winning with a less impressive, but still confident 21-13 scoreline. However, the day was to be the Danes as he won the final game 21-17 to add yet another super star to his list of conquests. From here on out it only gets easier for the Dane, but these next rounds will still be a test for his mental strength as there are no easy rounds in the Super Series events.

With Peter Gade and Taufik Hidayat withdrawn the draw looks somewhat lighter, nonetheless there are still some big names remaining. Lin Dan defeated his teammate Bao Chunlai rather comfortably in spite of a challenge in the second game 21-12, 21-19. Lin Dan will now play Chen Long in the second round. England’s Andrew Smith pushed eighth seed Sony Dwi Kuncoro, forcing a third game but eventually fell 23-21, 14-21, 21-16. A notable win for the day was Wong Choong Han who managed to break his recent slump by beating Hu Yun from Hong Kong 21-15, 21-16.

It was overwhelmingly a day for China today in the women’s singles, all nine of their players advanced to the second round, upsetting Pi Hongyan, Wang Chen, and Yao Jie along the way. Denmark’s Tine Rasmussen stands as the last remaining representative from outside of Asia.

The Danes have also been going strong in the men’s doubles with all three of their pairings winning their first rounds matches, but the next round will prove more challenging as Kasper Henriksen Faust and Anders Kristiansen will now face the top seeded Malaysians Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong.

Play resumes tomorrow at 1:00pm when Wang Yihan faces Wong Mew Choo in the women’s singles.

With a combined total of five hours and twenty eight minutes, today’s finals were a treat for the spectators. A tiring affair, but certainly everyone got their money’s worth. The day got started with the women’s doubles between China’s Pan Pan and Zhang Yawen against the home grown favourites Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Lena Frier Kristiansen. Clocking in at an hour and six minutes the Chinese pair took the title with a final scoreline of 22-20, 18-21, 21-12. Kamilla and Lena discuss the match below:

Following that match was another China vs Denmark match up featuring Wang Yihan and Tine Rasmussen, the first and second seeds respectively. Another marathon match, but this time it was a different story as Denmark managed to clinch their first title of the day as Rasmussen won this match 21-18, 19-21, 21-14 in an hour and four minutes. Rasmussen quoted her positive mental outlook as the key to her success on the day:

The day’s longest match of the day came next in the mixed doubles between Denmark’s Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christina Pedersen and England’s Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg. After an hour and twenty two minutes the defending champions Fischer Nielsen and Pedersen were the victors once again with a score of 21-16, 25-27, 21-17. Fischer Nielsen credits their will and determination to win as the reason that they came through after this long match:

In spite of their stellar performance in the tournament, Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen will have to settle for second best today as Malaysia’s Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong were too strong for the Danes. Boe and Mogensen took the lead initially with a 20-22 win in the first game, but the Malaysian’s stormed back to take the second 21-14 and the third 21-17. The popular Koo had the following to say after their match:

The last match of the day was unfortunately the worst. After such a spectacular run this week Marc Zwiebler’s magic touch seemed to have run out, or perhaps the string of upsets was too much for his legs. Either way, today was Santoso’s day as the young Indonesian won in two quick games 21-14, 21-6 in thirty eight minutes. Regardless of the poor performance in the finals today Zwiebler played a fantastic tournament and will likely be enjoying some new found confidence against the world’s top players.

It seemed as though the story of the tournament was the progress of Danish youngster Jan O Jorgensen, but Germany’s Marc Zwiebler is the real dark horse to look out for. Unseeded in this event, and with not a single easy opponent for the entire tournament, he has shown that he is capable of competing with the world’s best. Today he had to play Sony Dwi Kuncoro, the tournament’s second seed and he was magnificent. With no expectations on him Zwiebler has continued to play better with each passing match. After more than an hour Zwiebler defeated Kuncoro in three games 21-10, 16-21, 21-15.

Unable to keep his standard from last night, Jan O Jorgensen lost to Simon Santoso from Indonesia in two straight games 21-13, 21-13. Disappointed by his loss, Jorgensen can’t be too disappointed with himself as this has shown the level at which he is capable of playing, but as he told the press he needs to be more consistent and prevent playing as poorly as he did today. Santoso will now face Marc Zwiebler in the only final not to feature a Danish player.

YouTube Preview Image

Wang Yihan will be the only top seed left on the finals day tomorrow, and her opponent is the second seeded Tine Rasmussen. Wang had a close match with Japan’s Eriko Hirose in the semi-finals, winning 21-13, 19-21, 21-11 in an hour and four minutes. In spite of her top billing the pressure is surely on Rasmussen tomorrow as she aims to impress her home crowd.

Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christina Pedersen had a scare in their semi-final match, down a match point in the third game the fought back to win the match when Mateusiak hit a smash in the net. The final score was 21-18, 19-21, 23-21 and took an hour and twelve minutes. In the final they will face off against England’s Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg who played well to defeat China’s Tao Jiaming and Zhang Yawen 21-18, 21-17.

YouTube Preview Image

Denmark’s Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen have reason to be proud today after defeating the top seeded pairing of Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan. Boe and Mogensen commented that they had to bring their game to a new level in order to win their match today, and it appears that they did just that. In the final they will face Malaysia’s top pairing of Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong after they defeated China’s Sun Junjie and Tao Jiaming in two straight games

While Thomas Laybourn’s injury kept Kamill Rytter Juhl out of the mixed doubles, it hasn’t stopped her from showing she has strong prospects in the women’s doubles as well. With partner Lena Frier Kristiansen she has made it to the finals after defeating Japan’s Shizuka Matsuo and Mami Nato in three very close games 19-21, 21-18, 21-19. They will have to face China’s sixth seeded Pan Pan and Zhang Yawen. The Chinese women have always been known to dominate in the women’s doubles events so in spite of their sixth seeding the Danes will have to play very well in order to win tomorrow.

There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that the highlight of tonight’s matches was the match between Jan O Jorgensen and the top seeded Peter Gade. Gade has been the top Dane for the last decade with little challenge to that place, but tonight Jorgensen showed us that he is serious about being the replacement. The young Dane got off to a slow start losing the first game 7-21, and at that point it certainly looked like we were about to see a bloodbath. However, much like last night’s match against Eric Pang where Jorgensen lost the first game 9-21, he managed to turn things around winning the second game 21-17. Through the whole match Gade looked very calm, while Jorgensen looked much more hyped up and even nervous at times. In the end Jorgensen won the match by charging the net and finding himself with all the expectations of a nation. The final score was 7-21, 21-17, 21-16, and now Jorgensen will face Simon Santoso of Indonesia. Overall it was a good night for the home crowd as the majority of their players had success, the only exceptions being in the men’s doubles where Paaske/Rasmussen and Henriksen/Kristiansen both lost their matches. Paaske/Rasmussen lost to an inspired looking Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong fairly quickly, 21-11, 21-16.

While Jorgensen is grabbing all of the attention, there is another Cinderella story in the making for German player Marc Zwiebler. Zwiebler certainly has not had the benefit of an easy draw as he had to knock out both of Malaysia’s single’s players, Wong Choong Han and Hafiz Hashim, en route to his quarter-final match against Chen Long. While his previous two matches were quite close this match was much more comfortable as he won 21-16, 21-13. Next up Zwiebler has Sony Dwi Kuncoro, the tournaments second seed.

Jan O JorgensenThe day shifted back and forth between events but started with women’s singles and Japan got themselves off to a good start sending both Ai Goto and Eriko Hirose through to the quarter-finals. Goto struggled slightly with her Ukrainian opponent Larisa Griga, but pulled out the win with a scoreline of 21-17, 22-20.

A notable upset early in the day came in the mixed doubles when the Polish pair of Meteusiak/Kostiuczyk defeated Indonesia’s fifth seeded Gunawan/Marissa. The Polish pair were in control the entire match and never seemed in danger winning 21-15, 21-13. Shortly afterwards Simon Santoso made sure that another fifth seeded Indonesian wouldn’t suffer the same fate when he knocked out India’s Aravind Bhat.

Another great performance from Marc Zwiebler sent yet another Malaysian player packing. Zwiebler looked to be down and out in the third game of his match against Hafiz Hashim, trailing 14-17 he rallied back to take the third game and the match 16-21, 21-17, 21-18. Zwiebler will now face China’s Chen Long who struggled against Japan’s Kenichi Tago, but pull through in three games as well.

One of the best matches of the day had to be Koo/Tan vs Dasuki/Sukmawan. The Malaysians Koo and Tan were the favourites, but they found themselves down a game and it really came to the wire in the end. After all was said and done they won the match 16-21, 21-19, 21-19 but not without putting on a great show for the crowd first. At one point Koo was on his back returning drives to his Indonesian opponents.

YouTube Preview Image

India had much to be proud of today as both their top singles players advanced. Chetan Anand had a close call against Sune Gavnholt winning 21-19, 15-21, 21-9 but Saina Nehwal had a somewhat easier match against Camilla Sorensen winning in two straight 21-15, 21-14. Unfortunately for Anand Pawar he had to retire 5-2 down in the first game against Peter Gade. It isn’t clear exactly what happened, but Pawar walked off court holding his lower back. Finally RMV Gurusaidutt upset Joachim Persson in three games 17-21, 21-12, 21-19.

YouTube Preview Image

While Joachim Persson was off form today, the young up and comer Jan O Jorgensen had better luck in his match against Eric Pang. After a shaky start the young Dane came back to win for the third time in three weeks against Pang 9-21, 21-13, 21-11. Tomorrow we can look forward to a battle between the old guard and the new guard as Jorgensen is set to play defending champion Peter Gade.

After day one of the Denmark Open, the locals have to be happy with their players. The Danish team have several players and teams moving on to the next round. The highlight for the crowd appeared to be Peter Gade’s opening match against Sweden’s Henri Hurskainen. While the match was brief, you could tell by the crowd’s enthusiasm that they were excited to see the local hero play. Another great performance was rising star Jan O Jorgensen’s win over his compatriot Hans Kristian Vittinghus. The day wasn’t all good news for Denmark though as Lotte Bonde was rushed to hospital with a suspected knee injury.

One of the big surprises for the day came from Germany’s Marc Zwiebler who upset Malaysia’s Wong Choong Han in three games. This was the second disappointment in a row for Wong who lost at last week’s Dutch Open to Rajiv Ouseph in spite of his top seeding.

On another note, we have to commend the Denmark Open’s website. They have done a great job producing these videos from almost every player after their match, as well as the live streaming.
